Do Sunglasses Expire?
No. There is no use-by date on a pair of sunglasses, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology says research does not establish that ultraviolet protection deteriorates at all. What does end a pair's life is mechanical, visible, and entirely checkable.

The short answer
Sunglasses do not expire. There is no date printed on them, no shelf life, no recommended replacement interval, and — crucially — no established evidence that the ultraviolet protection in them fades. The American Academy of Ophthalmology, asked this question directly, answers it as honestly as an authority can: “Research doesn’t provide a direct answer to the question of whether UV protection deteriorates.”
That is not a dodge. It is the accurate state of the evidence, and the practical implication is clear: nobody has demonstrated that a lens which filtered ultraviolet when you bought it stops doing so because time has passed. What ends a pair’s life is mechanical damage, a change in your eyes, or the discovery that it never had UV protection to begin with. All three are checkable, and none of them is an expiry date.
Why the protection is unlikely to fade: it is not a coating
The worry behind this question usually goes: UV protection is a layer on the lens, layers wear off, therefore old sunglasses stop working. That was a reasonable model of how lenses were made once. It is not how most are made now.
The AAO notes that modern sunglasses typically have UV protection “embedded in the lens, rather than coated over it”. The ultraviolet-absorbing compound is mixed into the lens material during manufacture, so the filtering is a property of the plastic or glass itself rather than a film sitting on the surface. There is nothing to rub off with a shirt tail, nothing to dissolve in a cleaning spray, nothing to scrub away over five summers.
That distinction also explains the exceptions, which are real but narrow. A very old lens, or a cheap one made where the ultraviolet filtering genuinely was applied as a surface treatment, could in principle be degraded by heavy abrasion. And some prescription lenses do carry UV protection as an add-on coating rather than in the material, which is a different product with a different failure mode. What actually ends a pair’s life
1. Scratches — annoying, not dangerous
This is the most common reason a pair gets replaced, and the most commonly misunderstood. Asked whether scratched glasses need replacing, an AAO ophthalmologist was unambiguous: looking through a scratched lens “won’t harm the eye’s optical system”, though the scratches “could be distracting enough to cause eye strain and headaches”, and there is “no long-term harm in continuing to use them”.
So a scratched lens is a comfort problem. If you notice the marks while you are wearing them, or you find yourself tilting your head to see round a scratch, that is reason enough to replace them — but it is your comfort you are buying back, not your eye health.
Worth knowing where the scratches come from, because almost all of them are self-inflicted. The AAO’s cleaning advice is to use a soft cloth made for lenses and a mild detergent, and to keep tissues and clothing away from them, because paper and fabric are abrasive at the scale a lens coating cares about. 2. The frame loses its shape, or the lens loses the frame
Frames fail in ordinary ways: a hinge works loose, a screw drops out, plastic left on a hot dashboard relaxes and never sits straight again, a metal temple bends once too often and goes soft. None of that affects the lens, and much of it is repairable — a screw or a nose pad is a couple of dollars, and most opticians will straighten a frame for free even if you did not buy it there. The one to take seriously is a lens that has started to move in its rim, because a lens that pops out gets stepped on. That is a repair, not a replacement, on most frames.
3. Delamination and coating failure, which looks like expiry
Mirror coatings, anti-reflective layers and hydrophobic treatments are surface layers, and those genuinely do degrade. A mirrored lens that has started to craze or flake, or an AR coating that has gone cloudy in patches, looks exactly like a lens that has “gone off” — which is where a lot of the expiry folklore comes from. What has failed there is the coating, not the ultraviolet filtering underneath it. It is cosmetic and optical rather than protective, and it is usually caused by heat, harsh cleaners or abrasion.
4. The pair never had UV protection at all
This is the real risk, and it is not about age. A dark lens with no ultraviolet filtering is worse for your eyes than no sunglasses at all, because the darkness opens your pupil while letting ultraviolet through — and ultraviolet damage to the eye is cumulative. If you own a pair that came from a market stall, a petrol station or an unbranded seller and never stated a rating, the question is not whether it expired. The question is whether it ever worked. 5. Your eyes changed
Prescription sunglasses have a real, if soft, expiry: the day your prescription moves. And if glare has become noticeably harder to tolerate, or headlights have started to halo, that is a reason to see an ophthalmologist rather than to replace your sunglasses — those can be early signs of a cataract rather than a lens problem.
The one test that settles it
If you want to know whether a specific old pair still blocks ultraviolet, there is exactly one reliable answer and it is free: take them to an optical shop with a UV light meter. The AAO recommends precisely that, and most opticians will run the check in a minute whether or not you are a customer.
Everything else you will read online does not work. You cannot see ultraviolet, so no visual inspection tells you anything; lens darkness is unrelated to UV filtering; and the home tests involving remote controls, banknotes or UV torches are unreliable at best. Only reach for this section if you got a yes from the checklist above — a lens you can see past, a frame that will not hold, or a pair that never stated a rating. The replacement worth buying depends on which of those it was, so here are three, one per failure.
If the lens scratched. Glass resists scratching better than any plastic, and the Costa Fantail 580G is the glass lens this site rates most highly — polarized, 100% UV, and a contrast tint built for water. If the frame gave up. TR90 and similar nylon-family frames flex rather than snapping, which is why they dominate sport eyewear. The Duduma Polarized Sports is the cheap end of that idea — polarized, UV400, on a TR90 wrap for under twenty dollars — and at that price it is a pair you can afford to treat badly. If they never stated a UV rating. Replace them with something that does, and it does not need to be expensive. The Knockaround Premiums state polarized and UV400 together at around thirty dollars, which is the entire specification that matters. The AAO is explicit that price is not a proxy for ultraviolet protection, so this is one of the few places in eyewear where cheap and correct are the same answer.
The habit that matters more than any of this
If you want a pair to last a decade, the variable is not what you paid. It is whether you put them in a case rather than face-down on a table, whether you rinse them before wiping them, and whether you keep them out of a hot car. The AAO’s cleaning guidance is a soft lens cloth and mild detergent, not a shirt tail and not a tissue. Sunglasses do not expire — they get worn out, and almost always by us.

Does the UV protection in sunglasses wear off?
There is no evidence that it does, and the way modern lenses are made argues against it. The AAO notes that most sunglasses today have UV protection 'embedded in the lens, rather than coated over it' — the ultraviolet-absorbing compound is mixed into the lens material itself, so there is no surface layer to rub away. The worry comes from older or cheaper lenses where UV filtering was applied as a coating, which could in principle be damaged. How long do sunglasses last?
As long as the lens is clear enough to look through and the frame still holds its shape, which for a well-made pair that is cleaned properly can be many years. There is no interval to plan around. In practice most pairs are retired for one of four reasons: the lens has been scratched, usually by being wiped dry or cleaned with the wrong thing; the frame has been sat on, dropped or left on a hot dashboard; the prescription has changed; or they have been lost. Cleaning habits do more for lifespan than price does.
Are scratched sunglasses bad for your eyes?
Not directly. Asked exactly this, an AAO ophthalmologist answered that looking through a scratched lens 'won't harm the eye's optical system', though scratches 'could be distracting enough to cause eye strain and headaches' — and there is 'no long-term harm in continuing to use them'. So scratches are a comfort and clarity problem rather than a safety one. The exception is a lens where the damage is deep enough to have gone through the tint itself, which is rare, or where you cannot tell whether the lens had UV protection to begin with.
How can I tell if my old sunglasses still block UV?
Take them to an optical shop with a UV light meter. The AAO recommends exactly that, and most opticians will do it in a minute for nothing, whether or not you bought the glasses there. What will not work is any of the home tests that circulate online — you cannot see ultraviolet, a lens being dark tells you nothing about it, and neither does holding it up to a remote control or a UV torch in a way that proves anything. Should I replace sunglasses I have had for ten years?
Not because of their age. If the lenses are clear, the frame sits straight and the pair stated a UV rating when you bought it, a ten-year-old pair is doing the same job it did on day one. Replace it when you can see the scratches while you are wearing them, when the frame will not stay adjusted, when a lens rattles in its rim, or when you never knew whether it had UV protection in the first place — which, for a pair bought without a label at a market stall, is the one real reason to start again.
Do eclipse glasses expire, and is that the same thing?
Different product, different rules, and the confusion is worth clearing up. Solar eclipse viewers are certified to ISO 12312-2 for looking directly at the sun, and the American Astronomical Society's test for whether an old one is still usable is about damage rather than age: 'If the filters are torn, scratched, or punctured, discard them. If the filters are coming loose from their cardboard or plastic frames, discard them.' The bigger risk with eclipse eyewear is counterfeits — the AAO has published a first-hand account of buying fake eclipse glasses sold online with fraudulent certification claims. Ordinary sunglasses are never safe for looking at the sun, eclipse or not, however dark they are.
