Glass vs Polycarbonate Sunglass Lenses

Once you have settled the two questions that actually matter for your eyes — is the lens UV400, and do you want polarization — the next decision is what the lens is made of. In sunglasses this comes down to two materials in practice: glass and polycarbonate. They behave very differently, and the choice is not a matter of one being premium and one being cheap. Both appear at the top of the market; Costa sells the same frame in both and charges more for glass, while Oakley builds its entire performance range in polycarbonate on purpose.

Where glass genuinely wins

Clarity

Glass polishes to a more optically stable surface than plastic, and it does not deform in service. The practical result is an image that stays crisp right out to the edge of the lens, rather than softening slightly in the outer portion the way a steeply curved plastic lens can. On a long day of looking hard at something — scanning water for structure, picking out detail at distance — that stability shows up as less eye fatigue.

Scratch resistance

Glass is much harder than polycarbonate. A plastic lens relies on a hard coating for scratch resistance, and once that coating is compromised the soft material underneath marks quickly. Glass simply resists in the first place. If you are the kind of person whose sunglasses live loose in a bag or on a boat deck, this is the single most practical argument for glass.

Where polycarbonate genuinely wins

Impact safety

Polycarbonate is the material used for safety eyewear and children’s lenses because it absorbs impact rather than shattering. In any activity where something might hit you in the face — cycling, running on trails, ball sports, fishing with a hook moving at speed, or simply falling off something — that is not a marginal advantage. Glass in front of your eye during an impact is a category of risk polycarbonate does not have.

Weight

A glass lens is roughly twice the weight of the equivalent polycarbonate one, and lens weight is most of the weight of a pair of sunglasses. Over an hour you will not care; over eight hours on a boat or a trail, a heavy pair is the pair you take off, and a pair you take off is protecting nothing. Inherent UV blocking

Most polycarbonate formulations absorb ultraviolet inherently rather than relying on an added treatment — Oakley’s Plutonite is the best-known example, stated to filter 100% of UVA, UVB and UVC to 400nm regardless of tint. Glass can absolutely be made UV-blocking, but it requires the right formulation or a coating, so the claim is worth reading on the listing rather than assuming. The real-world version: Costa 580G vs 580P

The cleanest test case in the whole market, because Costa sells the same frames, the same polarizing filter and the same contrast tint in both materials. The only variable is the lens.

Choose 580G if clarity is the point: sight-fishing, flats work, or any situation where you are looking hard for a shape under moving water and the last five percent of definition matters. Choose 580P for everything else. The clarity gap is real but small, and it is smaller than the difference lens weight makes to whether you are still wearing the glasses at hour six. What about the other materials?

Two more you will meet, mostly outside sport frames:

  • CR-39 — a lightweight plastic with excellent optics and poor impact resistance. Common in prescription lenses, rare in sunglasses that are meant to be worn actively.
  • Trivex — sits between the two: close to polycarbonate for impact resistance, better than it optically, and more expensive than either. A genuinely good material that is priced out of most off-the-shelf sunglasses.

At the budget end you will also see “TAC” lenses, which are laminated polycarbonate composites with the polarizing film sandwiched inside. The one-line answer

Buy polycarbonate unless you can name a specific reason for glass. It is lighter, safer, and more than good enough optically for almost everyone. Buy glass when edge-to-edge clarity is the actual product — serious on-water work — or when your sunglasses live a hard life and you want a lens surface that will not scratch.

Are glass sunglass lenses better than polycarbonate?

Better at two things and worse at two others. Glass gives the best optical clarity available and resists scratching far better, because it is a much harder surface. Polycarbonate is roughly half the weight and dramatically more impact-resistant, which is why it is the standard for sport and children's eyewear. Neither is universally better — the right answer depends on whether you prioritize clarity or safety and comfort.

What is the difference between Costa 580G and 580P?

Only the lens material. 580G is glass, 580P is polycarbonate, and both carry the same polarizing filter and the same contrast tint that filters high-energy yellow light. 580G gives sharper edge-to-edge clarity and far better scratch resistance; 580P is about half the lens weight and much more impact-resistant. Most buyers are better served by 580P unless clarity is genuinely the point.

Do polycarbonate lenses scratch easily?

More easily than glass, yes — polycarbonate is a soft plastic and relies on a hard coating for scratch resistance. Once that coating is compromised the lens marks readily. Good habits close most of the gap: rinse before wiping, use a microfiber cloth rather than a shirt, and store the pair in a hard case rather than loose in a bag.

Are glass lenses dangerous in sunglasses?

They can break under a hard impact, which is why polycarbonate is the standard for sports eyewear, cycling, and anything involving a ball, a hook or a fall. Modern sunglass glass is generally toughened and Costa's 580G is used widely by anglers without incident, but if you are doing anything where an impact is foreseeable, polycarbonate is the safer material by a wide margin.

Which lens material is best for driving?

Either works optically, so choose on other grounds. Polycarbonate is lighter for long drives and impact-resistant, which is a reasonable consideration in a vehicle. Glass gives marginally sharper detail. The property that actually matters for driving is polarization, which cuts glare off wet road and car hoods — and never wear a tinted lens of either material at night.

Are there other sunglass lens materials?

Yes. CR-39 is a lightweight plastic with excellent optics but poor impact resistance, used mainly in prescription lenses rather than sport frames. Trivex sits between CR-39 and polycarbonate, offering good optics with high impact resistance at a higher price. Nylon and TAC composites appear in budget sport and value frames.
