How to Tell If Sunglasses Are Polarized
Four tests you can run in under a minute — with a phone screen, a second pair, a car window or a puddle — to prove whether a lens is genuinely polarized or just dark.

“Polarized” is the most valuable word on a sunglasses listing and one of the easiest to print without meaning it. It is also invisible: you cannot tell a polarized lens from a merely dark one by looking at it, which is exactly why the claim gets abused at the cheap end of the market and why a genuinely polarized $15 pair sits on a shelf next to a $60 one that is not.
The good news is that polarization is trivially easy to verify, because it has an unmistakable physical signature. Four tests below, in order of speed. The first takes ten seconds and settles it for almost everyone.
Test 1: the LCD screen test (ten seconds, most reliable)
Open a bright white image on a phone, tablet or laptop. Hold the sunglasses at arm’s length between your eye and the screen, look through one lens, and slowly rotate the glasses through about ninety degrees.
Polarized: the screen darkens dramatically as you rotate, often going close to black at one orientation before brightening again.
Not polarized: the screen looks identically tinted throughout the rotation.
Why it works: most LCD screens emit light that is already polarized in a single plane. When your lens’s filter is oriented across that plane, it blocks nearly all of it — two polarizers at right angles pass almost no light. Note that OLED screens and some modern phones behave less predictably, so if the result is ambiguous, try a laptop or a different device before concluding anything.
Test 2: the two-pair test (for when you have a known-polarized pair)
Hold two pairs of sunglasses in front of one another, lens overlapping lens, and look through both. Rotate one pair ninety degrees relative to the other.
Both polarized: the overlapping area goes almost completely black at one angle. The effect is dramatic and impossible to mistake.
Either one not polarized: the overlap simply gets a bit darker, evenly, and stays that way through the rotation.
This is the clearest demonstration of the underlying physics: a polarizing filter passes light vibrating in one plane, so two filters crossed at right angles pass essentially nothing. It is also the test to use in a shop, if you already own a pair you trust.
Test 3: the reflected-surface test (no equipment at all)
Go outside in daylight and find a reflective horizontal surface: a puddle, a wet road, a car hood, a pond, a glass tabletop. Look at the reflection with your naked eye, then through the lens, then tilt your head roughly ninety degrees to one side while still looking through it.
Polarized: the glare largely disappears when your head is upright — you can suddenly see into the puddle rather than at it — and floods back as you tilt.
Not polarized: the reflection dims a little (because the lens is tinted) but never disappears, and tilting changes nothing.
This works because light reflecting off a horizontal surface becomes predominantly horizontally polarized. A lens filter aligned vertically removes it; tilt your head and you rotate the filter out of alignment. Test 4: the car window test (the fun one)
In daylight, look through the lens at the side or rear window of a car — not the windshield — and rotate the glasses.
Polarized: you will see rainbow-colored blotches, spots or dark bands appear across the glass, shifting as you rotate.
Not polarized: the window looks like a window.
Side and rear car windows are tempered glass, which is rapidly cooled during manufacture and left with internal stress patterns. Those patterns affect polarized light, and a polarizing filter makes them visible. It is a genuinely satisfying test and hard to fake.
What these tests do not tell you
Three things worth being clear about, because passing the polarization test does not make a lens good.
- It says nothing about UV protection. Polarization and ultraviolet filtering are entirely separate properties. Check the listing for UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB — and remember the AAO’s warning that a dark lens without UV filtering is worse for your eyes than no lens, because it opens your pupil while letting ultraviolet through. - A mirror coating is not polarization. A mirror finish reflects some light away before it enters the lens. It reduces brightness and looks good; it does nothing to filter glare by orientation. Our mirrored lens guide explains what it does do.
- It says nothing about optical quality. A polarized lens can still be poorly made. Hold the pair at arm’s length, look through it at a straight edge such as a door frame, and move it slowly — if the line bends or wobbles, the lens is badly formed regardless of what filter it carries.
If your pair fails the test
That is not automatically a problem. Non-polarized lenses are the correct choice in two situations: on a golf course, where polarization erases the sheen off the grass you use to read a green (our golf roundup explains why), and for anyone who needs to read LCD instrument panels at awkward angles.

Does a mirror coating mean sunglasses are polarized?
No, and this is one of the most common misunderstandings in eyewear. A mirror coating is a reflective layer applied to the front of the lens that bounces some light away before it enters — it reduces total brightness and looks striking, but it does nothing to filter reflected glare by orientation. A lens can be mirrored and non-polarized, polarized and non-mirrored, both, or neither.
Does a dark lens mean it is polarized?
No. Darkness and polarization are completely independent properties. A very dark lens can have no polarizing filter at all, and a relatively light lens can be strongly polarized. Nor does darkness indicate UV protection — the American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that a dark lens without a UV filter is worse for your eyes than none, because it opens your pupil.
Can you tell if sunglasses are polarized without a screen?
Yes. Look at a reflective horizontal surface in daylight — a puddle, a car hood, a pond — through the lens, then tilt your head about ninety degrees. A polarized lens removes most of the reflected glare when your head is upright and lets it flood back as you tilt, because you have rotated the filter out of alignment with the reflected light.
Why do polarized sunglasses make my phone screen look weird?
Because most LCD screens emit light that is already polarized in one plane. When your lens's filter is aligned against that plane, the screen darkens or disappears entirely; at other angles it may show rainbow patterns. It is a side-effect of the technology working correctly, not a defect, and it is why polarized lenses can make some car dashboard displays hard to read at certain angles.
Do all polarized sunglasses block UV?
Not automatically — polarization and UV filtering are separate properties, and a lens can technically have one without the other. In practice, reputable manufacturers pair them, but you should still check the listing for UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB rather than assuming that 'polarized' implies it. UV protection is the property that matters for eye health; polarization is about comfort and clarity.
