These are the two most recognizable sunglasses ever made, they come from the same company, and people treat the choice between them as a matter of taste. It is not, really. They are built around opposite geometries and they flatter opposite faces, and once you know which face you have the decision mostly makes itself.
What follows compares them on the things that actually differ: shape logic, lens options, fit, durability and use case. On the one specification that concerns your eyes — ultraviolet — they are identical, so we will deal with that first and get it out of the way.
UV: a tie, and not the reason to buy either
Ray-Ban states 100% UV protection across its lens range. Both frames clear the bar the American Academy of Ophthalmology sets, and both clear the same bar as a $20 pair marked UV400. The AAO puts it plainly: darker lenses are not more protective and price is not a proxy for protection.

Shape: the actual decision
The Wayfarer adds angle
The RB2140 is a thick acetate frame with a distinctly trapezoidal front — wider at the top, angled at the outer corners, with a strong horizontal top rail. Everything about it is rectilinear.
That geometry adds definition, which is why it is the standard recommendation for a round face and works well on an oval one. The frame is visible on your face by design; it is a feature of your appearance rather than a transparent accessory. It is also substantial enough to balance a strong brow.
Where it struggles: on a square or angular face it doubles down on angles you already have, and on a heart-shaped face the heavy top rail adds mass at the widest point.
The Aviator follows the taper
The RB3025 is a thin metal frame with a teardrop lens that is wide at the top and narrows toward the bottom outer corner. There is no thick rail anywhere; the frame is a wire outline.
That does two things. The downward taper echoes the natural narrowing of a face from cheekbone to jaw, which is why it suits heart-shaped and square faces particularly well — on the latter, the curve softens a strong jaw. And because the frame is thin, it adds almost no visual weight, so a large aviator can cover a lot of face without dominating it.

Lens: the same trap on both
This is where most Ray-Ban money gets wasted, and it applies equally to the two frames. The base RB2140 ships with a non-polarized G-15 crystal lens. The base RB3025 is also non-polarized. Both have polarized siblings that cost meaningfully more, and the frames look identical from outside.
Polarization filters the horizontally oriented light that reflects off flat surfaces — water, wet road, car hoods, glass. The AAO describes it as the feature that addresses reflected daytime glare. The G-15 lens itself is worth a word in the Wayfarer’s favor. It is a crystal glass tint that holds color close to neutral with a slight green cast — conventional, excellent, and substantially more scratch-resistant than polycarbonate. Fit and comfort
The Aviator wins on adjustability and loses on marks. Silicone nose pads on wire arms can be bent by an optician in two minutes to raise, lower or tighten the fit — which makes an aviator one of the few premium frames that can be genuinely tuned to an awkward bridge. The Wayfarer wins on stability and loses on flexibility. A molded acetate bridge either fits your nose or it does not, and there is very little an optician can do beyond warming and gently reshaping the frame. When it does fit, it distributes weight over a broader area and leaves no marks.

Buy the Wayfarer if your face is round or oval, if you want the sunglasses to be part of how you look rather than a neutral accessory, and if you like the idea of a crystal glass lens you will struggle to scratch. The Ray-Ban RB2140 Wayfarer is the version to buy, and it is the most reliable single answer to “one pair that goes with everything.”
Buy the Aviator if your face is square or heart-shaped, if you want something light that disappears on your face, if you drive a lot, or if you have a bridge that fights molded frames and need pads you can adjust.
