Same tint technology, two different lens materials — and the price gap between them is real money. Here is who genuinely needs the glass, and who is buying weight for nothing.

Costa is one of the few eyewear brands where the lens is genuinely the product, and the choice between 580G and 580P is the single biggest decision you make when buying a pair. It is also the one that most reliably confuses people, because the marketing puts the two side by side as options rather than explaining that they are the same lens made from different stuff.
Here is the short version, and then the reasoning. 580 is the tint technology — Costa filters a specific band of yellow light with the aim of raising contrast, which is what makes the water look more legible. G means the lens is glass. P means it is polycarbonate. Polarization and 100% UV blocking are on both. Everything else is a trade between clarity and weight.
What is identical
Worth stating clearly because it removes half the confusion:
- The tint. 580G and 580P in the same color are engineered to deliver the same contrast effect. You are not choosing between lens performances, you are choosing a substrate.
- Polarization. Standard across the 580 range in both materials. This is genuinely unusual at the premium end — the base Ray-Ban Wayfarer and Aviator are both non-polarized, and several popular Oakley trims are too. With Costa you do not have to check.
- UV. Both block 100%. On the specification that concerns your eye health, the two are identical — and identical to a $25 pair marked UV400, which the American Academy of Ophthalmology is consistently direct about.
What glass buys you
Optical clarity
Glass is the more optically precise material. It can be ground and polished to a tighter tolerance than injection-molded plastic, it does not have the slight internal stresses that molding introduces, and it holds its geometry to the edge of the lens more reliably. On a curved wraparound the difference is more noticeable than on a flat frame.
Is it perceptible? For most people, in most conditions, marginally. For someone spending six hours staring through a lens trying to resolve a fish silhouette under two feet of moving water, yes — and that is precisely the customer Costa built the glass line for.
Scratch resistance
This is the argument people underrate. Polycarbonate is soft; it accumulates fine scratches from ordinary handling, and a boat is a hostile environment of salt, sand and hard surfaces. Glass is dramatically harder and shrugs off treatment that would haze a plastic lens within a season.
If you own a pair for years and use them hard, a glass lens will look better at the end of that period than a plastic one that cost the same. What polycarbonate buys you
Weight
Glass is substantially denser than polycarbonate, and in a large wraparound lens that adds up to a frame that presses on your nose over a long day. Every Costa 580G wearer notices this; whether it bothers them depends on the frame size and how long they wear it.
It also has a second-order effect: heavier lenses put more load on the frame and on the bridge, which means a glass pair slides down more readily as you sweat. Impact resistance
Polycarbonate is the impact-resistant lens material — it is what safety eyewear and children’s eyewear are made from for exactly that reason, and Prevent Blindness specifies polycarbonate for sport protectors. Glass can chip or shatter under an impact that polycarbonate would shrug off.
For a fishing frame worn on a boat this is a manageable risk. For anything with a chance of a knock — running, cycling, working, throwing them in a bag — it is a genuine reason to choose 580P.
Price
The glass version of a given frame costs meaningfully more. That gap is real money, and it buys clarity you may not perceive and scratch resistance you may not need. It is the clearest case in the whole category of a premium that is either entirely justified or entirely wasted depending on what you actually do.

The recommendation
Buy 580G if you sight fish, spend sustained hours on open water, or want the pair to still look good after five hard years. The Costa Fantail 580G is the reference frame for this — a wraparound built for the water with the glass lens that is the whole point of the brand.
Buy 580P for everything else, which is most people. You get the same contrast tint, the same polarization and the same UV protection in a lens that weighs less, survives impacts and costs less. What is the difference between Costa 580G and 580P?
The tint technology is the same — 580 refers to Costa's filtering of a specific band of yellow light to raise contrast. The letter is the lens material: G is glass, P is polycarbonate. Is Costa 580P polarized?
Yes. Polarization is standard across Costa's 580 lens range in both materials — it is one of the few premium brands where you do not have to check whether the specific SKU includes it. Both 580G and 580P also block 100% of UV. The letter after 580 describes only the substrate the lens is made from.
Which Costa lens is better for driving?
580P, for two reasons. It is substantially lighter, which matters on a long drive, and it is impact resistant rather than brittle — a relevant consideration in a vehicle. Glass lenses are also heavier on the nose in a frame you wear for hours. Whichever you choose, remember that no tinted lens of any kind is appropriate for night driving.
Does Costa 580G scratch easily?
No — the opposite. Glass is dramatically more scratch resistant than polycarbonate, and that is one of the two genuine arguments for it. A polycarbonate lens picks up fine scratches from ordinary cleaning within a year or two even with care; a glass lens shrugs off the same treatment. What glass is vulnerable to is impact: dropped on a hard surface at the wrong angle, it can chip or shatter.
Can you get 580G in every Costa frame?
No. Costa offers glass in a subset of its range, generally the frames aimed at anglers, and the lighter or more sport-oriented frames are polycarbonate only. That is a deliberate engineering constraint rather than a marketing one — a large wraparound glass lens in a lightweight sport frame would be uncomfortably heavy and would put more stress on the frame than it is built for.
