Sunglass Frame Materials, Compared

The lens gets all the attention and the frame decides whether you keep wearing them. Acetate, TR-90, nylon, monel, titanium and the rest — what each one costs you in weight, durability, adjustability and heat tolerance.

Almost every sunglasses guide, including most of ours, argues about the lens. That is the right priority for your eyes — a lens without ultraviolet filtering is genuinely worse than no sunglasses at all. But it is the wrong priority for whether you actually wear the pair. The frame decides the weight on your nose, whether the arms still grip after two summers, whether an optician can bend them back after you sit on them, and whether the skin behind your ears goes red.

Frame material is also the spec most likely to be missing from a listing. Premium brands publish it. Budget listings say “metal” or “plastic” or nothing. This page is what to do with that — what each material genuinely does, and which one to insist on for the way you use sunglasses.

The quick version

  • Everyday pair you want to look good in: cellulose acetate. Color depth, substance, and an optician can heat-adjust it to your face.
  • Sport, sweat and impact:blended nylon — TR-90, Grilamid, Oakley’s O Matter. Light, springy, molds into a wrap.
  • Anything you are rough with, or a nickel allergy: titanium.
  • Salt water: beryllium or titanium if metal, nylon if plastic. Monel and plated alloys corrode first.

The plastics

Plastic frames, as a family, are cheaper, lighter and available in far more colors and styles than metal, which is the AAO’s summary of them too. The trade is that they break more easily than metal frames, and that with time the color can fade slightly and the strength drops a little. That is not a reason to avoid them — it is a reason to know which plastic you are buying, because the four in common use behave very differently.

Cellulose acetate (zyl)

The classic eyewear plastic and the one your Wayfarers are made of. The AAO describes zyl as inexpensive, lightweight, available in many colors, and easy for an optician to adjust. That last property is the underrated one: acetate softens with gentle heat, so a trained optician can bend the temples and tweak the bridge to your head. Almost nothing else on this page lets you do that.

Acetate frames are cut from sheet stock rather than injection molded, which is why the color runs through the material and why layered and tortoiseshell patterns look like depth rather than print. It has weight in the hand in a way that reads as quality. The Ray-Ban RB2140 Original Wayfarer is the reference example — a hand-assembled acetate frame in a shape that has barely changed in decades, and one people keep for years.

The weakness is the same property that makes it adjustable. Acetate relaxes in heat, and a car dashboard in summer gets hot enough to distort the geometry permanently. If you keep a pair in the car, keep it in the glovebox, not on the dash.

Cellulose acetate propionate

A nylon-based plastic that the AAO describes as lightweight and hypoallergenic, and slightly softer than other plastic frames. It shows up on frames aimed at people who react to other materials, and on lightweight fashion frames where the softness is a comfort feature rather than a durability problem. Less common on sunglasses than on optical frames.

Blended nylon — TR-90, Grilamid, O Matter

This is the sport material, and the trade names are more familiar than the generic. The AAO describes blended nylon as strong and lightweight, a popular choice for sports or safety frames, and often found in wraparound styles because it is easily molded. All three of those facts are the same fact: a thermoplastic polyamide can be injection-molded into a curved shape and will spring back to it after being flexed.

Practically, a nylon sport frame is the one you can drop, sit on lightly, and sweat into for a season. The Tifosi Seek FC 2.0 is a Grilamid TR-90 frame and a fair example of the class — light enough to forget on a long day, springy enough to survive a bag. Oakley’s O Matter is the same idea under a brand name; the Oakley Holbrook uses it in a lifestyle shape rather than a sport one.

The cost is adjustability. Nylon does not heat-shape the way acetate does, so what you buy is broadly what you get. If a nylon frame is wrong for your head, the fix is a different frame, not an optician’s hot-air blower. Our size guide covers how to get the numbers right the first time.

Optyl

A brand of epoxy resin rather than a thermoplastic, and worth knowing because of one property: the AAO notes that when heated it becomes very malleable, which lets an optician mold the frame to the shape of your face. It is lighter than acetate and holds its adjusted shape well. You will meet it mostly on European designer frames.

The metals

Metal frames stand up to wear and tear better than plastic ones. They are also thinner at the rims, which makes a large lens look less heavy on the face — the reason aviators and oversized rectangles are usually metal. The differences between the alloys come down to three things: weight, corrosion, and whether they contain nickel.

Titanium

The AAO calls titanium very strong, lightweight and corrosion-resistant, sturdy enough to be a good choice for older children or anyone who is rough on their frames, and hypoallergenic — an important consideration for people who are allergic to metals such as nickel. It is the best metal on this page on almost every axis, and it is priced accordingly. If you have reacted to a metal frame before, this is the answer.

Monel

The workhorse. Monel is a mixture of metals that is quite flexible and corrosion-resistant, and it is what most mid-priced metal eyewear is actually made from. The caveat is the one the AAO raises: it may contain nickel or other metals that cause reactions in people with sensitive skin, though most monel frames carry a coating to protect the skin. Coatings wear through at the nose pads and temple tips first, which is where a reaction usually shows up.

Beryllium

Cheaper than titanium, very lightweight and strong, flexible enough to be easy for an optician to adjust, and extremely corrosion-resistant — which the AAO specifically calls out as making it a good choice for people who spend a lot of time in or around salt water. Stainless steel

Lightweight and strong but not as light as titanium, corrosion-resistant, and often cheaper than other metal frames. A sensible default when titanium is out of budget and you still want something that will not pit.

Memory metal (Flexon)

A very flexible alloy that comes back into shape even after it is twisted or bent, and which is also lightweight, corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic. The AAO recommends it for active kids, and the reasoning extends to any adult who keeps destroying frames. It is the only material here that genuinely forgives being sat on.

Aluminum

Used in some high-end frames. Corrosion-resistant, flexible and strong. Rare enough on sunglasses that it is more a design statement than a category.

The parts that are not the frame front

Two components fail long before the material does, and neither is usually specified.

Hinges.On a metal frame the hinge is a separate soldered or riveted assembly with a screw through it, and the screw backs out. On an injection-molded nylon sport frame the hinge is often integral — molded as part of the temple — which removes the screw problem and replaces it with the fact that if it snaps, the frame is finished. Spring hinges, on either, add tolerance for a face wider than the frame and are the single most useful upgrade on a cheap pair.

Nose pads and temple grips.Adjustable silicone pads on wire arms are the reason metal frames fit a wider range of noses than molded plastic bridges — you can bend them. Sport frames instead use hydrophilic rubber that gets tackier as you sweat. Both are consumables, both discolor, and on most premium brands both are replaceable for very little. What sunglasses ask of a frame that eyeglasses do not

Most frame-material advice is written for prescription eyeglasses, which live indoors. Sunglasses have three extra problems.

Heat. They spend their lives in the sun, in cars, on dashboards and on the roof of your head. Thermoplastics tolerate this far better than acetate.

Salt and sweat. Salt crystallizes inside hinge joints and corrodes screws. Sweat carries salt to the same places. This is where beryllium and titanium earn their money and where plated monel gives up.

Lens area and leverage. A sunglass lens is bigger and heavier than a clear one, and a wrapped lens puts a constant outward load on the temples. That is why sport frames are nylon and why a wide, heavy acetate frame slides down a nose that a slim optical frame would sit on happily.

How to find out what you are buying

Read the specification, not the description. “Metal frame” is not a material and “high-quality plastic” is not either. The brands that publish an actual material — acetate, Grilamid TR-90, titanium, O Matter — are also, in our experience of compiling this site’s product data, the brands that publish a UV figure and a polarization state. The habits travel together.

Where a listing does not publish the material we record it as unstated rather than guessing, and several genuinely good budget frames sit in that gap. The SUNGAIT SGT458 is a fair example of the trade: an ultra-light metal rectangle that states polarization, UV400 and a 62mm width — but not which alloy. At that price the alloy is almost certainly a plated base metal, and it should be treated as a frame you will replace rather than repair. That is a reasonable thing to buy on purpose; it is only a problem if you thought you were buying titanium.

What is the best material for sunglass frames?

There is no single best one, because the materials solve different problems. For an everyday pair you want to look good in, cellulose acetate (zyl) gives you color, weight in the hand and a frame an optician can adjust. For sport, blended nylon — TR-90 and Grilamid are the names you will see — is strong, light and easily molded into a wraparound. For durability and skin sensitivity, titanium is the strongest case: the American Academy of Ophthalmology describes it as very strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic. Pick by how you will use the pair, not by which sounds most premium.

Is acetate better than plastic?

Acetate is a plastic — that is the confusion. Cellulose acetate (zyl) is a specific plant-derived plastic that is cut and polished from sheet stock, which is why it holds deep color and layered patterns. What people usually mean by 'plastic' is injection-molded polycarbonate or nylon, which is cheaper, lighter and generally tougher but flatter-looking. Acetate looks better and adjusts better under heat. Injection-molded frames survive more abuse. Neither is objectively better.

What frame material is best if I have a nickel allergy?

Titanium. The AAO specifically names titanium as hypoallergenic and an important consideration for people allergic to metals such as nickel, and it names monel — the most common general-purpose eyewear alloy — as a mixture of metals that may contain nickel, although most monel frames carry a coating to protect the skin. Memory-metal frames sold as Flexon are also described as hypoallergenic. If you want to avoid the question entirely, any of the plastics does that by definition, and cellulose acetate propionate is described as hypoallergenic in its own right.

What is TR-90 and is it the same as Grilamid?

Both are trade names for thermoplastic polyamides — the family the AAO calls blended nylon, which it describes as strong, lightweight and a popular choice for sports or safety frames because it is easily molded into wraparound styles. Grilamid TR-90 is one specific branded grade of that material. In practice a listing saying TR-90, Grilamid, nylon or polyamide is describing the same class of frame: light, flexible, hard to snap, and difficult to adjust at an optician because it does not take heat-shaping the way acetate does.

Why did my sunglasses stop fitting after a summer in the car?

Heat. Acetate and most frame plastics soften well below the temperature a parked car reaches in direct summer sun, and a frame left on a dashboard can relax out of its original geometry permanently. That is the real reason a pair that fitted in June sits crooked by August. It is also, unhelpfully, the same property an optician uses on purpose — heat is how acetate frames are adjusted, and Optyl frames in particular are described as becoming very malleable when heated so the optician can mold them to your face.

Do sunglass listings tell you the frame material?

Often not, and that is worth knowing before you shop. Premium brands publish it; budget listings frequently say 'metal' or 'plastic' or nothing at all.
