Why Your Sunglasses Slide Down (and How to Stop It)

Six causes, from a too-wide bridge to temples relaxed by a hot car — with the fixes you can do at home in five minutes, and the one that needs an optician.

Sunglasses that creep down your nose are more than an irritation. Every time the frame slides forward it stands further off your face, which opens a gap for light to come in from the sides and below — the exact exposure that a well-fitting frame is there to close. And a pair you are constantly pushing back up is a pair you eventually stop wearing, which protects nothing at all.

The good news is that this is almost always fixable, often in five minutes and for a few dollars. Here are the six causes, ordered by how common they are, with the specific fix for each.

1. The bridge is too wide for your nose

This is the single most common cause and the least obvious, because the frame can look perfectly sized from the front. Your nose is narrowest at the top and widens as it descends. If the bridge of the frame is wider than the part of your nose it is meant to rest on, the frame simply slides down until it finds a section wide enough to support it — which is halfway down.

The fix: stick-on silicone nose pads. They add a couple of millimeters of material either side, which effectively narrows the bridge and lifts the frame back to the narrow part of your nose, and they add friction at the same time. 2. The temple arms are bent too straight

The temple tips are supposed to curve down behind your ears, hooking gently rather than running straight back. New frames often ship close to straight, and any frame gradually relaxes with use. Without that hook, nothing is holding the frame back against gravity when you tilt your head forward.

The fix: warm the temple tips with a hair dryer on a low setting for about twenty seconds — enough to soften, not enough to be uncomfortable to hold — then gently increase the downward curve and hold the shape until the material cools. Do it in small increments and test between each. Acetate and nylon frames take this well; be more cautious with thin metal, which can crease.

3. The frame is too narrow for your face

If the temple arms are splayed outward and pressing at the widest part of your head, the frame is fighting your skull, and the force has to go somewhere — forward, off your nose. You can usually spot this by the pressure marks at your temples after an hour, and by the way the frame springs forward slightly when you put it on.

4. Heat has relaxed the frame

Frame materials soften with heat, and a car dashboard in summer gets far hotter than most people assume. A pair left there repeatedly loses some of its temple bend permanently, which is why sunglasses that fitted perfectly in April slip by August. The same applies to leaving them on a beach towel in direct sun.

5. Sweat, sunscreen and skin oil

Friction is what actually holds a frame in place, and sweat, sunscreen and natural skin oil all reduce it. This is why sunglasses that behave perfectly at a desk start sliding on a run, and why the problem is worse at the beach than in town.

The fix: grip materials. Silicone nose pads and silicone temple sleeves add friction cheaply. Also worth doing: clean the nose pads. A film of sunscreen and oil builds up on the pads and makes a bad problem worse. Warm water and a little soap, then dry properly.

6. Loose hinges, or a genuinely heavy lens

Two smaller causes. First, hinge screws work loose over time, which lets the temples splay and reduces the grip either side of your head. A small eyeglass screwdriver and thirty seconds fixes it, and a drop of clear nail polish on the screw head stops it recurring.

Second, weight. A glass lens is roughly twice the weight of the equivalent polycarbonate, and heavier frames sit lower and slide sooner. The five-minute triage

  1. Do the temples press at the sides of your head? If yes — the frame is too narrow. Buy wider; nothing else will work.
  2. Do the temple tips curve down behind your ears? If not — warm and bend them.
  3. Does the frame still slip with the temples right? Add silicone nose pads.
  4. Does it only slip when you sweat? Add temple sleeves, or buy a grip-coated sport frame.
  5. Still slipping? Take it to an optician. A proper adjustment solves most of what is left, and it is usually free.
