Sunglass Lens Coatings, Explained
Anti-reflective, mirror, hydrophobic, scratch-resistant, flash. Five coatings sold on the same lens, doing five unrelated jobs — and only two of them are worth paying extra for.

Coatings are where sunglass marketing gets least honest, because five completely unrelated treatments get listed together as though they were a single quality tier. A lens described as having “premium multi-layer coatings” might have a genuinely useful back-surface anti-reflective layer, or it might have a decorative flash mirror and nothing else. They are not the same purchase.
Here is what each one actually does, which surface it goes on, and whether it is worth paying for. The short version, if you want it now: the back-surface anti-reflective coating and the smudge-repellent top layer are worth money. Everything else is either standard equipment or cosmetic.
Anti-reflective — and why the back surface is the one that matters
On clear prescription glasses, an anti-reflective coating goes on both surfaces to let more light through and stop other people seeing reflections in your lenses. On sunglasses the logic inverts, and this is the single most misunderstood point in the category.
You do not want more light coming inthrough the front of a sunglass lens — cutting light is the entire point. What you do want is to kill the light coming from behind you. Sun over your shoulder hits the inside surface of the lens and bounces forward into your eye. That is the source of the faint ghost image, the reflection of your own eyelashes, and the washed-out patch in the corner of your vision on a bright afternoon.
A back-surface AR coating removes it, and on a wrapped frame it removes quite a lot of it, because a curved lens presents more of its inside surface to light arriving from the side. This is one of the genuine differences between a premium lens and a cheap one, and it is almost never advertised in terms a buyer can act on.
The FAA’s own lens guidance flags the catch: AR coatings are porous and attract water and oils, so they need to be sealed with a smudge- and water-repellent layer that extends the AR coat’s useful life and makes the lens easier to keep clean. An AR coating without that top layer is a fingerprint magnet.
Mirror coatings — functional, then decorative
A mirror coating is a thin reflective layer on the front surface that bounces a portion of the incoming light away before it ever enters the lens. That lowers the total light reaching your eye without requiring a darker base tint, which is genuinely useful in the very brightest conditions: snow, glaciers, open water in the middle of the day.
Three things it does not do, all of which get implied in product photography:
- It adds no ultraviolet protection. UV filtering lives in the lens material or in a separate treatment. A mirrored lens with no stated UV figure is exactly as protective as an unmirrored one with no stated UV figure, which is to say unknown.
- It is not polarization. A mirror reflects light of all orientations; a polarizing filter blocks one plane. They are frequently sold together and are entirely independent. Our polarization test settles which one you have.
- It does not make the lens tougher. If anything the reverse: a mirror coating on the outside surface is the layer that shows scratches first.
Below the top brightness tier, a mirror is mostly a styling choice, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are not paying a functional premium for it. Our mirrored sunglasses guide covers the full picture, including flash mirrors and gradient mirrors.
Scratch-resistant coatings — standard equipment, not an upgrade
Every plastic lens needs one. The FAA’s lens-material comparison is blunt about the hierarchy: glass is the most scratch-resistant material and needs no help, CR-39 plastic scratches easily even with a coating applied, and polycarbonate is manufactured with a scratch-resistant coating substantially stronger than the one CR-39 gets — because bare polycarbonate is soft enough that it would be unusable without one.
The practical consequence is that a scratch-resistant coating on a polycarbonate sunglass lens is not a feature, it is the baseline. If a listing charges extra for it, you are paying for something you already had. What legitimately varies is quality, and that shows up over years rather than in a spec sheet.
The harder truth is that no coating makes a lens scratch-proof, and once a coating is scratched there is no repair. It is bonded to the lens, so damage to it is damage to the lens. Polishing kits marketed for the job strip it unevenly and leave a haze that is worse than the original scratch. Hydrophobic and oleophobic — the underrated one
Hydrophobic means water-repelling: rain and spray bead up and blow off instead of sheeting across the lens. On a bike or a boat that is a real functional gain.
Oleophobic means oil-repelling, and it matters more than most buyers realize for a reason that is indirect. Most lens damage does not happen in use — it happens during cleaning. A lens that resists fingerprints needs less pressure and fewer passes to clean, and every pass with a cloth is an opportunity to drag a grain of grit across the coating. A slippery lens is, over years, a less scratched lens.
The two are usually sold as a single top layer, and as noted above, an AR-coated lens really needs one. This is the coating we would pay for after the back-surface AR.
Flash, gradient and color coatings
Cosmetic, and honestly described as such by the better brands. A flash mirror is a lighter mirror that tints the reflection without dropping much light. A gradient coating is darker at the top than the bottom, which has a real use case — it shades the sky while leaving the lower field clearer for a dashboard or a book — and is otherwise a styling decision.
The one place a gradient tint is a considered medical suggestion rather than a look is light sensitivity: the American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that patients with photophobia can often be helped by tinted lenses or by gradient tints where the upper portion is considerably darker than the lower. How to read a listing
Coatings are the part of a spec sheet where absence of information is the information. A brand that has invested in a back-surface AR coating will say so, because it is expensive. A listing that says only “multi-layer coated” has told you nothing at all.
The three questions worth asking of any listing, in order:
- What UV figure does it state? If it does not state one, no coating claim on the page makes up for that. See our UV protection guide.

- Is there a smudge-repellent top layer? Especially if there is an AR coating underneath it.
Two lenses where the coatings are doing real work
If you want to see what a fully coated premium lens feels like, the Maui Jim Red Sands is the clearest example on this site — a polarized glass lens where the anti-reflective treatment on the back surface is a large part of what the price buys, and where the difference is most obvious with the sun behind you.
For the mirror case rather than the AR case, the Julbo Camino shows what a mirror coating is actually for: a silver mirror over a category 4 mountain tint, reflecting light away before it reaches a lens that is already very dark. That is a coating solving a problem rather than decorating a frame.

Frequently asked questions
Do sunglasses need an anti-reflective coating?
On the back surface, yes, and it is the coating most people have never heard of. Light arriving from behind you hits the inside of the lens and reflects off it into your eye — which is why you sometimes see your own eyelashes or a bright ghost image in the corner of a lens on a sunny day. A back-surface AR coating removes that. A front-surface AR coating on sunglasses is much less useful, because on a tinted lens you generally want fewer reflections reaching you, not more light getting in.
Does a mirror coating add UV protection?
No. A mirror coating reflects a portion of visible light before it enters the lens, which reduces the total brightness reaching your eye and is genuinely useful on snow and open water. Ultraviolet filtering is a separate property, usually built into the lens material or applied as its own treatment. A mirrored lens with no stated UV figure filters no more ultraviolet than an unmirrored one — check for a stated UV400 or 100% UV figure regardless of how reflective the lens looks.
Is a scratch-resistant coating necessary on polycarbonate?
It is effectively mandatory, and reputable polycarbonate lenses ship with one already applied. The FAA's own lens-materials guidance notes that polycarbonate is manufactured with a scratch-resistant coating much stronger than the one applied to CR-39 plastic, precisely because bare polycarbonate is soft. What you should not do is pay a separate premium for it on a sunglass lens — it is table stakes, not an upgrade.
Can a scratched coating be repaired or removed?
No, and this is the one to be realistic about. Coatings are bonded to the lens surface, so a scratch in the coating is a scratch in the lens. Polishing kits sold for the purpose strip the coating unevenly and leave the lens hazier than the scratch was. No manufacturer warranty covers lens scratches either — Maui Jim, Costa, Oakley and Ray-Ban all exclude them as normal wear. Replacement lenses, where the brand sells them, are the only real fix.
What is a hydrophobic or oleophobic coating for?
Hydrophobic repels water, so rain and spray bead up and blow off rather than sheeting across the lens. Oleophobic repels oils, so fingerprints and skin contact wipe off with far less pressure. On sunglasses the second one matters more than people expect, because most lens damage happens during cleaning — a lens that needs less scrubbing gets scratched less. Both are usually sold together as a single 'smudge and water repellent' top layer.
Do coatings wear off, and how fast?
Yes, and heat is the main enemy rather than time. The FAA's guidance warns that coated lenses should not be subjected to excessive heat, to avoid delamination or crazing — a hot dashboard is the classic way to destroy a good coating. Cleaning technique is the other factor: dry-wiping a dusty or salty lens drags abrasive particles across the coating. Rinse first, then use a clean microfiber, and a coating will outlast the frame.
